Kitte- the revitalization of Tokyo Central Post Office

I could never caught up with new retail facilities in Tokyo not because I was in overseas, even when I am in Tokyo I can't...because these come up one after another.

I've heard about 'Kitte' right after I came back in Japan and finally got a chance to check it out (The white part at the bottom).

It's a revitalization project for the Tokyo Central Post Office in front of Tokyo Station therefore the post office section is remained on the 1st floor (ground floor). Oh by the way, 'Kitte' means postal stamps in Japanese.

1Fには郵便局としての営業が残っていました。

Atrium takes natural light from the ceiling (6 story building). The floor layout is a triangle surrounded along the atrium.
6階建ての建物のアトリウムには天井から自然光が採光されています。ビルは真ん中に穴の空いた（アトリウム部分）三角形になっています。

It seems PV panels on the ceiling.
太陽光パネルが屋根部ガラス部分に貼ってあるようです。

Shops in the building are mainly "zakka" = a variety store (stationaries, kitchen stuff, etc) and cafe. 6th floor is all restaurants and B1F is for regional shops .

店舗は主に雑貨屋さんで、6Fがレストラン街、B1Fがご当地ショップの集まりになっています。

Photo is not clear though there are some postal design stationaries are sold at some shops.

もちろん、郵便のデザインの雑貨もいくつかありました。

The president room of the post post office is remained and it has a great view.

旧局長室は保存してあり一般公開してます。そこからの眺望がとってもよい。

こんな感じで窓から改修を終えたばかりの東京駅が見えます。元々はこの形だったらしいけど、子供の頃から見てきた景色が少し変わって、なんだか変な感じ。

Look! The toilet sings are soooo invisible!
ここからは、NGだった点を。まずはサイン！見えない！実際におじさんは男性用トイレが見つからなくて困ってました。

Wall sings are OK...but still small...

Females might have to be careful of the length of their skirt or they should avoid walking on the edge of the corridor because it's all glasses.
女子は短いスカートなら、コリドーの際を歩くのは避けるべし！ガラス張りなので見えそうでした。

It has enough space to walk, look and shop. It's nice to have zakka shops mostly in the building. Nice renovation/revitalization of the old post office. The biggest disappointment is the public signage....otherwise I would love to go back there soon.

こじんまりしつつも、雑貨が中心なKitteはなかなかでした。何度か行くと飽きちゃうのかも知れないけど、商品を入れ替えれば、リピーターも増えそうな感じ。久しぶりに見やすい商業施設に出会ったなーと思いました。サイン計画はもの申したいけど！

Time per person to communicate - living in a big city or a burb?

While I'm figuring out my potential job, I've been enjoying adjusting my life in Japan as a Japanese.

Of course I miss my life in Aussie land, it wasn't bad as much as when I came back here from the U.S. probably because I could still enjoy communicating with people in Nagano.

As I was used to have a small talk with people or say something to people while I was in overseas, I always miss things like that while I was in Japan. However, I haven't since I came back from Australia this time...

because people talk a lot here!

at a pharmacy, casher at a supermarket, a cafe, on street, neighbors etc...etc..

then I realized the fact that a person takes more time to communicate per person in here (Nagano) than Tokyo.

For example. a store clark in Tokyo keep saying the same thing to every customer and try to complete each transaction as quick as possible. On the other hand, a store clark in Nagano faces on each customer by eye contacts and a bit of talk (and smile!).

Why is that?

There are tons more cutomers in a line in big cities, but the actual number of customers in burbs absolutely less than urban area which means a person can take more time to communicate per person in burbs than big cities.

In addition, I like to get people's attention and communicating with people so I sometimes 'talk' to a store clark in Tokyo just a tiny words. They usually seem surprise and show me their real faces which makes my day.

It's difficult to balance between productivity of 'work/task' and 'lively communication' but I believe that a tiny effort from yourself works for people you talk to face on you and make your day!

オーストラリアから帰国して以来、就活（転職活動？）をのらりんしつつ、「日本人」としての日本での生活を取り戻す環境を楽しんでいる今日この頃です。

不思議なことに、アメリカから帰国したときよりも、今回の帰国の方があまり「あっち（海外）生活」が恋しくなりません。それは多分、帰国してからも人と会話をしているから。

海外生活を終えて帰ると、海外では普通にしていた、「スモールトーク」…ちょっとした会話を通りすがりの人やお店の人と楽しんだり、何かと人とやりとりをするということ…がなくなってしまうので、寂しいなぁと思っていたのです。今回長野の上田に帰ってきてみて、普通にいろんな人と会話をするので、あまり寂しくないのかも。

近所の人や、お店の人、歩いている人、結構普通にちょっとしたやりとり、挨拶、会話があるのです。

そこで、見つけた事実：郊外や地方の人は都会の人に比べて、1人1人にかけるコミュニケーションの時間が長い！

東京だとレジの店員さんは長蛇の列をこなすために1人あたりの作業を流していく感じになる。だから、決まり切った台詞（そう、台詞）しか言わないし、「はい、次」といった感じ。けど、長野だと、レジの店員さんが本当に私に向かって話してくれているという力を感じる。そこで些細なことで少し会話が生まれたりもする。

人を驚かすことはもとより人と話すのが好きな私は、東京で、つい忙しい店員さんなのに、おつりを落としても「大丈夫ですよ」と言ったり、質問してしまったりする。すると、びっくりした顔をされるが、そこで初めて彼ら彼女らの本当の顔を見れるような気がするのです。1日がとてもいい日だったと思える瞬間。

仕事の生産性と生きた会話をすることのバランスって難しいのかもしれません。でも、自分の少しの努力や気持ちを寄せることによって、自分に向き合ってもらえて1日がいい日になるなら、こんな嬉しいことはないですよね。

MART 130

It's been a few days since I came back to Japan from Melbourne for good....
What I have missed there- friends of course, not Uni but cafe and coffee!!!!!
To imaginary go there today, I'll introduce my favorite cafe in Melbourne, Mart 130.

This is a tram stop/cafe. Yes, the perfect combination for train lovers like me :)

Each tram stop in Melbourne has a number to identify. This tram stop is no. 130. If you read the word 'tram' from the opposite direction....yes! "mart" that's why the place is called Mart 130. It's located along the Albert Park where the formula one is held in April.

Food here is amazing. Everything is so yummy. Fruits on my faves depends on seasons which makes me even happier.

Sigh...so sad I can't go there for breakfast...please go eat and think of me...

メルボルンから日本に戻って数日。

友達はもちろん恋しい。大学院生活は全く…。そしてカフェとコーヒーがとっても恋しい！と、いうわけで、今日は私がメルボルンで1番お気に入りだったカフェを紹介します。

「Mart 130」というカフェ。

なんとここ、トラムの駅がそのままカフェになっているのです。

メルボルンではすべてのトラムの駅に番号がついています。ここMiddle Parkという駅の番号は130。Tramを逆に読むとMart。だから、Mart 130というわけ。

電車好きにはたまらないトラム側に面したテーブル、かわいいインテリアな屋内のテーブル、大きなアルバートパーク（4月にF1レースをやる公園）に面した裏側のテーブルと、行く度にいろんな席を楽しめます。

お料理もとってもおいしい。私のお気に入りはパンケーキとフレンチトースト。この上に季節のフルーツで作ったコンポートがのってきます。おいしすぎる！メルボルンに行く機会があれば、朝食はぜひここで！Cityから96番のトラムにのって、130番で降りるとそこがMart 130です。

Heide Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne Suburb

Finally, a bit of architecture/landscape architecture from Melbourne!

My friend and I went to Hide Museum of Modern Art. It's located in a sort of in a middle of park/forest. It takes 30-40 min to get there from downtown Melbourne by a car.

There are three parts of the exhibitions. Heide I looks like a normal museum building but Heide II and III were used to be residential. The interior is absolutely lovely and beautifully keep the harmony of classic and modern.

Outside, it's a massive sculpture garden. It's massive green area so we saw some families having a picnic.

There is a veggie patch area behind the Heide III which is my favorite house in the museum. These veggies are picked for the museum cafe, Cafe Vue at Hide. It is a nice cafe to have a break with creative food.

We've never seen they advertised but it is absolutely lovely way to get out of the city and spend a nice day.

メルボルンに現代美術館があったとは！

友達が「ずっと行きたいと思ってたのに行ってないんだよね−」というので早速行ってきました。メルボルン市内から車で約30〜40分行った郊外の森の中。広告とか1度も見たことがないので、隠れた名所です。

そもそもは個人の家だったそうで、Heide1を除くあとの2と3はかわいいおうちです。大半は彫刻の森美術館のような広いグリーンスペースの中にいくつか彫刻アートがあるエリア。そのエリアは無料なので、家族がピクニックしたりしていました。

Heide3の裏にちょっとした畑があって、そこでとれた野菜達は併設されたカフェで使用されます。かわいい。ちなみにこのカフェ、市内に店舗があるそうで、2件目をここに出店したのだとか。お料理の創作性はとってもステキなのですが、少し塩っ気が強いのが気になりました。

春や夏の過ごしやすい日にはとってもオススメな場所です。

how to order coffee in Melbourne...Australia?

My friends who are in Australia especially in Melbourne are experts of coffee but I had no clue how to order coffee until my second day of Australia.

These are the coffee you can get in Australia (and probably New Zealand as well...and maybe UK, too?). Oh and you have options of milk: Regular, Skinny or Soy. Also you can do weak, strong, extra hot etc... sooooo many choices! This is for people who have never been one of these countries.

If you've never been to these countries, it would be nice to remember these or think what your favorite is before starting your trip and keep ordering it or try one after another during your trip. Melbourne is a cafe heaven. Heaps cafe has a good coffee. It must be fun to go one after another to try each coffee.

オーストラリア（多分ニュージーランドも。多分UKも？）は何気にコーヒーの国で、写真の通りこれだけのメニューがあるんです。ここから更にミルクが、レギュラー、スキニー（無脂肪ミルク）、ソイミルク（豆乳）と選べて、そこから更に弱め（Weak）、強め（Strong）とかExtra Hotとかできます。私も慣れるまではこれを覚えられずいつも決まった物を飲んでいました。ちなみにアメリカンコーヒーはありません。

だったと思う…。実はせっかくメルボルンにいるのでと思い、コーヒースクールに行きました。やっぱりエスプレッソマシーンが欲しくなりました…。

オーストラリア、NZ、イギリス（？）に行く前に、これらを覚えておくとコーヒーがより楽しめて、旅が更に楽しくなるかも…？

Ways to celebrate new year

Happy 2013! Hope the new year will bring you lots of happiness, laugh and great food adventures :)

To celebrate new years, you can see the difference from your way and other ways once you are out of your country.

- Australia (Fireworks)

There is no special meal for new years eve (nye) and new year. Fireworks is the highlight. Major cities have 9:30pm fireworks for families with kids and midnight for everyone. Sydney fireworks is one of the most famous one. Luckily I did it last year at Milson's point near Sydney Harbor Bridge. Each year it has a theme. 2012 was 'dream.' I think this is much more worth to see than Times Square in NYC.

- U.S. (Fireworks)

Pretty much the same as Australia but there was no 9:30pm fireworks for kids when I was there, only midnight. I was in Philadelphia (Philly!) twice on the day. The fireworks comes from behind the art museum and over Benjamin Franklin Bridge. A bridge and fireworks are one the perfect combination!

- Japan (special meals and going to shrines)

By nye, we clean up our house (can't carry over dirt and dust in a house!) and display the decoration for new year (pine tree brunches at gates/rice cakes with a citrus inside of a house/flowers etc.). Ladies are busy to prep new year's meal so typical nye dinner is noodle (Soba. It's called "Toshikoshi Soba" for nye) because prep is easy. Also noodle is long= we pray for long and healthy life by eating it.

Over midnight, people go to temples and hit a bell at temple. It is said there are 108 avarice in our mind (greedy!) so try to get rid of them by hitting the bell 108 times one person after another. After new  year, we go to shrines or temples to pray for good new year.

New year's meal, it looks like a deluxe bento box. We keep eating for a next few days. The food stay long so ladies don't have to cook for a few breakfast/dinner for the few days after new year. To be honest, I'm not big fan of this meal because the taste makes me boring...but again every single food has meaning so it's worth to have. Eh...my mom has shrink the meal year by year because we are small family and don't wanna take days to finish. A lot of people order it from department stores or restaurants these days.

明けましておめでとうございます（もう七草すぎましたが）。

2013年が皆様にとって健康でたくさん笑う年になりますように。

新年のお祝いの仕方、所変わればそのやり方も様々。

・オーストラリア（花火）

彼らはクリスマスに盛大なごちそうとプレゼントを交換するので新年は基本的に花火がメインです。もちろんそこでパーティーがあってみんな飲んでます。シドニーの花火は世界的に有名で去年私も行きましたが、あれは一見の価値あり！ニューヨークのタイムズスクエアよりも価値があると思います！夏だから夕涼みの花火でみんなでピクニックしながらみる花火は最高です。多くの都市では子供のために9:30の花火が用意され、メインが12時に打ち上げられます。

・アメリカ（花火）

ほぼオーストラリアと一緒。一番有名なのはNYのTimes Squareだけど何せ寒空の下に何時間も居なくちゃ行けない、道路が封鎖されたり、エリア丸ごと閉鎖されてトイレにもいけないなんてこともしばしば。大人もおむつをして参戦するほどだとか。ちなみにPhiladelphiaに住んでた私はBenjamin Franklin Bridgeから花火を見ていました。花火と橋ってどこにいてもいいコンビネーションですよね。

・日本

これはもうみなさんご存じ。クリスマスよりもお正月が忙しい日本。両方やるから、ただでさえ忙しい年末年始が余計忙しいって噂も。近年ではおせちは発注する人が増えたみたいですが、我が家では縮小傾向にあるだけで、母が少し作ってくれます。昔は品数も結構多かったのですが、みんなすぐに飽きてしまうので…。ただそれぞれ意味があるのでなかなかおせちそのものをなくす勇気はなく…。

所変われば、お祝いの仕方もさまざま。旧正月の人はまた違う時期に違うやり方でお祝いしますよね。

ちなみに、現在メルボルンにいる私は、おそばが大好きなので、我が家の形式にならい、大晦日はうちで冷たいおそばと天ぷらのパーティーをしました。フルーツたっぷりのサングリアと一緒に。季節と場所にあった、でも日本風をばっちり楽しめました。

Hope you will like my taste of design, architecture, planning, food, culture etc. I am originally from Japan. After I lived in the U.S. for 5 years and 2 years in Australia to get two urban planning degrees, I would really love to keep things I've experienced in a blog and shared with my friends in here and there so I decided to start this blog.

I try to keep it in both English and Japanese as much as I could and promise I will try so don't go away even if you find only one language sometime...

Urban planning can be related to anything as we work with people in various fields. Architectures and design always inspire me as lots of my friends are in the field. Oh, food! This is the most important connection between friends, family and myself. Good thing to live in overseas is there are many opportunities to share different cultures.

Hopefully this blog will be a little spice for you to find more fun things.
